Roundabouts Are Planned for Rt U.S. 42 in Prospect

A bit of a transformation is planned for the U.S. 42 corridor through Prospect. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has selected a design that would replace the traffic signals at Timber Ridge, Fox Harbor, and River Road with three two-lane roundabouts. The purpose is to improve traffic flow and safety along a section of U.S. 42 that experiences congestion, increasing traffic volume, and a high rate of crashes. The current four travel lanes would remain, with two lanes in each direction, and the existing centerline of U.S. 42 would remain largely unchanged. This is not a plan to widen the entire corridor into a five-lane roadway.

In addition to the three roundabouts a raised median is planned from Timber Ridge east to River Road, along with curbs on both sides of U.S. 42. A shared-use path would be added along the north side near the businesses, while a sidewalk on the south side would connect with existing pedestrian facilities near the park and government center. These additions are intended to make the corridor safer and more accessible for pedestrians as well as motorists.

For residents and property owners, the raised median and roundabouts could change how certain properties and businesses are accessed. Drivers may need time to adjust to the new traffic pattern, and future construction will likely create temporary inconvenience. However, the completed project is intended to reduce delays and maintain steadier traffic movement within Prospect.

The project is still in the design and planning process. According to the latest information from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, final design is expected to continue through 2027. Right-of-way and easement acquisitions are anticipated to begin in 2027 and continue through the end of 2028, followed by utility coordination and relocation. A firm construction start or completion date has not yet been published, and the schedule remains subject to funding and change.
